It's a large tree with a pinnate leaves with a very distinguish smell. Mature trees have deeply furrowed, gray bark. The flowers are very small appearing in the spring. The nuts appearing in early fall; they are heavy, round, and surrounded by a greenish yellow husk that matures to brown.
